I just finished reading Piper’s short book Risk is Right. This is an excellent little book on what it truly means to live an unwasted life. Here is my response.
One of the most frustrating experiences is to know that I could have done more to serve God. This is why I tend to overwork myself at the risk of burning out. I realize this is probably not a very wise choice, as God does not value me because of what I do, but because of who I am in Christ. However, I believe there must be some level of risk taken in order to do the work God has for us during our time on earth.
My challenge is this: it is time for the church in Canada to take some risk. I think there are some churches doing this well. But, there is a great need for courage these days. We have valued safety and security for too long, and our generation is suffering for it.
Let us boldly proclaim the truth of the gospel, even at the risk of persecution and ridicule. Even if it means we are accused of hating that which brings shame to the gospel.
“When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we entreat. We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, the refuse of all things.” 1 Corinthians 4:12-13
