Most of the books I read are classic Christian authors who’s names are often familiar, but many are not aware of why those names are so well known. Below are some of my favorite quotes from these authors that will help you get an understanding of their great minds, and possibly entice you to pick up one of their books.

C.S. Lewis (1898-1963)

God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.

The Problem of Pain

‘Safe?’ said Mr. Beaver. ‘Who said anything about safe? ’Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the king, I tell you.’

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Saint Augustine (345-430 A.D.)

Thou awakest us to delight in Thy praise; for Thou madest us for Thyself, and our heart is restless, until it repose in Thee.

… what am I to thee that Thou demandest my love, and if I give it not, art wroth with me, and threatenest me with grievous woes?

The Confessions of Saint Augustine

George MacDonald (1824-1905)

To say Thou art God, without knowing what the Thou means – of what use is it? God is a name only, except we know God.

It is by loving and not by being loved that one can come nearest to the soul of another.

- Quotes taken from C.S. Lewis’ George MacDonald: An Anthology

William Law (1686-1761)

The husbandman that tilleth the ground is employed in an honest business, that is necessary in life and very capable of being made an acceptable service unto God. But if he labours and toils, not to server any reasonable ends of life, but in order to have his plough made of silver, and to have his horses harnessed in gold, the honesty of his employment is lost as to him, and his labour becomes his folly.
