Keeping the Darkness in Check

Don’t dream big dreams of power and influence for the future if you can’t do the small things you are responsible for at the present.

I got this idea from The Hobbit, when Gandalf explains why he decided to take Bilbo on the journey. Here is the quote:

Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love. Why Bilbo Baggins? I don’t know. Perhaps because I am afraid, and he gives me courage.

Even though this was said in the fictional world of Middle Earth, it points out a great Christian principal. Where we see this most evident in the real world is in the home. If you think you can go out and change the world, but you are neglecting your family, you are missing the main way we fight evil in this world.

The way we do this in our home is by sharing devotions together at breakfast with our kids. By starting the day with God’s wisdom, I hope we will build into our family a desire to live a life of love and care for others. I dare not expect to impact the world for Christ if I can’t impact my own family.
