Psalm 62 keeps coming up in my devotion time. It is a song of confidence in God’s ability to rescue and protect when God’s people were facing oppression. Instead of trusting in wealth and power for security, God’s people declared that God alone is able to provide security.
For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. (vv. 1-2)
I do not face threats against my life on a regular basis, and chances are the majority of my readers don’t either. However, we face the opportunity regularly to trust in things other than God for security. It could be the praise of others, or the need to satisfy lustful desires. There are many things that challenge God’s place in our lives as the main source of security.
As I wrote yesterday, I am aiming to increase my desire for holy things so that my affections toward Christ will be higher than anything else. A step in that direction is to evaluate what gives me a sense of security, and repent of making those things more valuable than God.
