Does it wound my heart to offend God?

This question came to me after reading a prayer out of the book The Valley of Vision. This book is a collection of puritan prayers, which challenge me to embrace a deeper understanding of the mysteries of God.

O, if he would punish me for my sins,
it would not wound my heart so deep to offend him;
But though I sin continually,
he continually repeats his kindness to me.

That statement, “it would not wound my heart so deep to offend him,” captured me. Does it wound my heart to offend God? Do I even grasp the seriousness of my disobedience? I am ashamed to say I do not.

The prayer concludes with this request: Give me a heart full of divine, heavenly love.

Oh, I pray, that God would soften my heart so that every instance of disobedience would be met with sorrow, and that the sorrow would turn to love for my Lord, who forgives my sin and repeats his kindness to me forever.
