Trusting the Rock that is Higher Than I

A Psalm of David, for times of trouble:

Hear my cry, O God,
listen to my prayer;
from the end of the earth I call to you
when my heart is faint.
Lead me to the rock
that is higher than I,
for you have been my refuge,
a strong tower against the enemy.
Let me dwell in your tent forever!
Let me take refuge under the shelter of your wings!
For you, O God, have heard my vows;
you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.
Prolong the life of the king;
may his years endure to all generations!
May he be enthroned forever before God;
appoint steadfast love and faithfulness to watch over him!
So will I ever sing praises to your name,
as I perform my vows day after day. (Psalm 61, ESV)

I do not know much about the trouble David was in at the time when he wrote this Psalm, or the vows he is referring to. For me, the trouble I am facing is uncertainty and the vows I have made are that I will devote my whole life to the service of God’s kingdom.

David’s words are encouraging words to me at a time when the winds of change and uncertainty are blowing, and I need to find a way to stay focused on the task at hand.

The advice in this psalm is to seek refuge in “the rock that is higher than I.” There may be plenty of uncertainty in my life right now, but one thing is always certain: God is a sovereign and loving Father; his plans are always good and will never fail.
