It is common for us to think that God will only dish out that which we believe is good for us. By thinking this way, we are placing our own judgment higher than God’s, and assuming He has lost control when you experience times of trouble.

If you are a child of God, the Devil is powerless to harm you except by God’s permission. Like Job, we are called to live blameless lives. However, just as pure gold is not proven unless it is put through the test of fire, a blameless life is not proven unless tested by trials.

“And the Lord said to Satan, ‘Behold, he is in your hand; only spare his life…

Then [Job’s] wife said to him, ‘Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die.’ But he said to her, ‘You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?’ In all this Job did not sin with his lips.” Job 2:6, 9-10.

If you think during times of trouble that the Devil is at fault, you give him too much credit. All things, both good and evil, happen under God’s sovereign control. When you receive trouble as though it is from the Lord, His power will bring you through it.
