Advent is commonly associated these days with a combination of calendars, chocolate, candles, or religious liturgy. The word comes from the Latin word adventus which means “coming” or “arrival” and is the four-week season of preparation for the coming of Jesus.

You may think of preparation for Christmas as more of a busy time of shopping, decorating and anticipation of family gatherings. However, these are all things that can distract us from the preparation intended during the season of Advent.

Advent is not only a way for us to get into the right frame of mind as we approach December 25. It is also a reminder of our preparation for the second advent of Jesus. It is a season of restlessness, anticipation, and a longing for the glorious day when the ultimate Christmas gift will be fully received.

During this Advent season, I am committing to publishing a short devotional for each day. My favourite daily devotional, Seeking God’s Face, will be our guide. Using the suggested Scripture readings, we will journey together through the Advent season with a sense of purpose and thoughtfulness.

If you would like to receive updates each day, please subscribe by email (the form is below this post). Or, follow me on Twitter, where I will be posting links to the articles each day. The first article will be published this coming Sunday, December 1.
