When Jesus arrived as the Messiah, he came in the most unexpected way. He was expected to be the next king of Israel, yet he was born in a stable.

In Matthew 24, Jesus promises that his return would also be unexpected. “No one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Matthew 24:36)

Then Jesus says, “Therefore keep watch..”

The expectation of Jesus’ return can often be eclipsed by the concerns of today. We should not neglect our responsibilities but rather live in such a way that we expect Jesus to come at any time.

The advent season is a reminder that we are the sort of people who live in anticipation. We wait for our Saviour to come, to restore creation to fullness and to build the Kingdom of God which will exist with Jesus as King forever.

If you live with that anticipation, your life will be transformed. You will not worry about the accumulation of wealth or status. Advent means our gaze is constantly looking into the horizon, hoping to see the arrival of Jesus.
