Living on Purpose – Part 2

Compiled by Grant Schwartzenberger

The Why

 C. S. Lewis wrote in The Great Divorce, “There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, in the end, ‘Thy will be done.’” That is the difference between heaven and hell.

Os Guinness

If an individual is careless, unconcerned or negligent about their core reason for existence, it doesn’t matter if they excel in other areas.

Unknown

“You can get all A’s and still flunk life.” Os Guinness

It’s incredibly easy to get caught up in an activity trap, in the busy-ness of life, to work harder and harder at climbing the ladder of success only to discover it’s leaning against the wrong wall.

Dr. Steven Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

More and more, a psychiatrist is approached today by patients who confront him with human problems rather than neurotic symptoms. Some of the people who nowadays call on a psychiatrist would have seen a pastor, priest or rabbi in former days. Now they often refuse to be handed over to a clergyman and instead confront the doctor with questions such as, “What is the meaning of my life?”

Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning

The Journey

For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible… everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him.
Colossians 1:16 (MSG)

At some point, every one of us confronts the question: How do I find and fulfill the central purpose of my life?

Are you looking for purpose in life? For a purpose big enough to absorb every ounce of your attention, deep enough to plumb every mystery of your passions, and lasting enough to inspire you to your last breath? This book is about the reason why we are each here on earth.

Os Guinness, The Call

“There’s one thing I’ve never been able to hire anyone to do for me: find my own sense of purpose and fulfillment.” Os Guinness

The journey to discovering God’s purpose for our lives. To discover is to know God.

It’s not about you. You were born by his purpose and for his purpose. (Warren, Rick. The Purpose Driven Life)

The Caution

We cannot find God without God. We cannot reach God without God. We cannot satisfy God without God—which is another way of saying that our seeking will always fall short unless God’s grace initiates the search and unless God’s call draws us to him and completes the search.

Os Guinness, The Call

The Trap

Diversion is the most common reason for what Socrates called the “unexamined life”     (O. G Fool’s Talk)
