The Voice That Calls

The question of completeness, identity, and purpose, is one we all ask. Who am I? What purpose do I serve?

How you answer those questions is very dependent on the voice you are listening to. The voice you listen to is dependent on how confident you are in that voice delivering on the promise of purpose and identity.

This is a matter of faith.

Every human being on earth believes in something. Most people believe in what they can explain. This is why religion and science are the foundation of most peoples’ believes. They both attempt to explain the reason for our existence. However, neither of them is personal enough to answer the question of personal purpose, which leaves us searching for other voices that promise to give us what we desire.

Whatever you are doing on a daily basis is a result of you responding to a voice. At some point in your life, someone or something beckoned you to a future version of yourself. Maybe you don’t remember this happening. Probably not.

Let’s not worry too much about the past. Whatever voice you chose to listen to, good or bad, doesn’t matter today. What matters today is the voice you will listen to for current and future decisions.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

Revelation 3:20 (ESV)

This is the voice of Jesus.

He is beckoning you to fellowship with him. This fellowship promises to bring wholeness, completeness, purpose and meaning to your life.

I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

John 15:1-5 (ESV)

Bearing fruit is the equivalent of purpose. What is the purpose of a grapevine? To bear fruit. If it does not bear fruit, it is useless and will be thrown away.

If you are not bearing the sort of fruit in your life that Jesus intends, you will feel useless and begin to search for meaning from some other voice. You will respond to the beckoning call of a voice that promises to bring meaning and purpose, but will ultimately lead to unanswered questions and the search for purpose and meaning in yet another beckoning voice.

People do not come to believe in the answers they seek because of need… they disbelieve in what they believed in before because of new questions their previous beliefs could not answer.
