Wisdom in the Whirlwind Part 11: Job 22-26

Two cycles of the debate have concluded, and the friends have gotten nowhere in their arguments against Job. The third cycle, which we are examining in its entirety this morning, shows the effects of their fruitless efforts: Eliphaz provides a substantial third speech, but Bildad can manage only a brief argument, and we hear nothing at all from Zophar. By contrast, Job continues to defend his innocence and perhaps grows even more passionate.

Wisdom in the Whirlwind Part 10: Job 20-21

In chapters 20-21 two worldviews collide. Zophar’s moral certainties vs. Job’s anguished experiences. Tucked in this emotional battle is a crucial lesson for us today. It is a lesson that will increase our wisdom, shape our discernment, and anchor our hope in something more solid than our experiences and more helpful than mere theory or doctrine.

Wisdom in the Whirlwind Part 9: Job 18-19

In this sermon, we take a brief look at Bildad’s speech and how his dogma shapes his thinking about Job’s situation. Then, in Job’s speech, we will see the source of his shame and his hope for a redeemer.

Wisdom in the Whirlwind Part 8: Job 15-17

We come now to the second round of speeches. Each of the three friends has taken a crack at trying to comfort Job by suggesting solutions to his problem. Job has responded to each of them, insisting that he is righteous and does not deserve what has happened to him. Eliphaz is up first once again and is not beating around the bush.
Job then reacts with the exact same accusation, that Eliphaz and the other two friends also speak empty words before turning back to God with harsh words.

Wisdom in the Whirlwind Part 7: Job 11-14

In this message, we look at Zophar’s first speech in which he rebukes Job, then we will look at the source of Job’s pain, followed by Job’s true desire, which is to be seen and believed.

Wisdom in the Whirlwind Part 6: Job 8-10 – Honest Hope

God is not limited to our understanding of him. When we accept that there is much more to God than our limited understanding, we can approach him with humility and honesty.
Only when we seek the truth about God with this posture of humility and honesty will we have a source of hope that can withstand any injustice or suffering we experience.

Wisdom in the Whirlwind Part 5: Job’s First Response to Eliphaz

The sermon delves into the theological implications of suffering through the lens of Job. It emphasizes that suffering highlights a broken relationship with God, not merely the violation of rules. Job laments his pain and feels betrayed by friends, ultimately questioning God’s attention. The message parallels Job’s suffering to Jesus’ own experience, demonstrating that Christ’s suffering provides meaning and redemption to human pain.

Wisdom in the Whirlwind Part 4: Eliphaz’s First Speech

This sermon explores Job’s suffering and the misguided comfort from his friends, particularly Eliphaz. While they initially sympathize, their attempts to provide comfort devolve into judgment and unhelpful advice, assuming Job’s suffering results from his wrongdoing. Ultimately, it emphasizes trusting God beyond a transactional view of righteousness and blessings.

Wisdom in the Whirlwind Part 3: Job’s Lament

The sermon focuses on Job Chapter 3, exploring Job’s profound suffering and emotional lament. It discusses themes of faith amidst despair, questioning life’s meaning, and the nature of God’s justice. The message encourages honesty in suffering, ultimately emphasizing trust in God’s goodness and wisdom throughout trials.

Wisdom in the Whirlwind Part 2: Disaster Strikes

The sermon discusses the story of Job’s profound loss, emphasizing his character as a righteous man who suffers undeservedly. It explores themes of faith, trust in God’s wisdom, and the nature of true worship during suffering. The message encourages believers to remain present with those in pain and to trust God amidst life’s uncertainties.

Wisdom in the Whirlwind Part 1: Introduction to Job

The sermon introduces the book of Job’s genre, characters and central message. Job’s story challenges conventional understanding regarding retribution and God’s governance. The message of Job is to understand God’s justice beyond human comprehension during times of suffering.

Basic Faith Part 11: What is the Church?

The sermon discusses the essence of the church as a community formed by God and focused on being reflective of His nature. It emphasizes the church as God’s temple, the body and bride of Christ, and a priestly community. Key questions consider how members cultivate spiritual presence, unity in love, and priestly identities.
