The Importance of Humility

This past weekend was the Prairie Bible Institute Student Leader Retreat. The topic was servant leadership. This is somewhat of a cliché topic for a leadership retreat, but we should never let the overuse of the term “servanthood” diminish it’s importance.

At the final session we were invited to share something that God has laid on our hearts. I decided to share something that has been on my heart for a couple weeks now. I will also share it here, and I hope that it will provide encouragement and warning to others as much as it has for me.

Nurture Your Soul

I decided to pick up William Law’s Serious Call to see if I could find a good quote to put the finishing touches on my last paper of the semester. I still haven’t found one I…

My Deepest Affections

In the last week I have had a deep longing to understand the word “affection,” particularly in the context of my relationship with Jesus Christ and other people. It started last weekend when I began to read Jonathan Edwards’ Religious Affections.

Speak, O Lord

If you haven’t done devotions yet today, I encourage you to read and reflect on these words. “Speak, O Lord” by Keith & Kristyn Getty Speak, O Lord as we come to you To receive…

Notes from the Tilt-a-Whirl: Hedonistic Nihilism

Hedonistic Nihilism as defined in Notes from the Tilt-a-Whirl: Hedonism – the belief that the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain is the only intrinsic good. A hedonist always tries to maximize pleasure…

Holidays

As you may (or may not) have noticed, I haven’t been writing any new posts lately. I’ve been enjoying some down time while visiting family and friends over the last week and a half. I…

The Sin of Condemnation

I have found a person who engages in occasional drunkenness is far less damaging than the one who views himself more highly than he ought. It’s the speck and the plank situation (Luke 6:42). This is not about being gracious with sinners (we are all sinners), it’s about recognizing that condemnation of other peoples actions is hypocritical.

OS X Lion Review: First Impressions

I’ve been using Mac OS X Lion for a few hours now and I wanted to post some first impressions before I get used to all the changes and forget about them.

My initial thought is that the user interface takes some getting used to. This is a major change from Snow Leopard, even though at first it doesn’t seem that different.

The Bible is About Jesus

This morning my youngest son, Evan, who turned 3 in June, was “reading” his picture Bible. As he turned the page he said, “Jesus!” Then he turned to the next page and said, “Jesus!” Every page was about Jesus.

Evan probably knows the Bible better than most of us. While we are busy trying to figure out all the deep things of the Bible, Evan knows simply that the Bible is about Jesus. Every page, every story, is about Jesus…

Called by God

We, as believers, have the privilege of being chosen by God. The theological term for this is election. But, what about those who are not believers? It doesn’t seem right that God would choose some and not others. This is something I struggle with.

Fortunately, it is not for us to worry about who is elected or not…

Should I Join Google+?

I’ve been using Google+ for about a week now. I was fortunate enough to get an invite almost right away, but it wasn’t as cool as I thought it would be. It was, and still is, actually kind of lonely. But hopefully that will change soon.

I’m sure there are some who are wondering what all the hype is about and if they should bother joining Google+…

Acts of Christian Obedience

This is “part 3” on the topic of obedience.

Here are some key acts of obedience I have found to be part of the sanctification process of a Christian. Some may call these christian or spiritual disciplines, which is fine, however my approach here is less about practicing disciplines and more about responding to life in general with a spirit of obedience to God.
